| Rathlin
Island lies five miles off the coast of County Antrim,
Ireland and thirteen miles from the Mull of Kintyre Scotland. It
is "L" shaped "like a sock" the rugged north
part, the leg, its open end pointing westwards towards County Donegal
and away beyond to America, the leg is about five mile long with
higher ground and the southern part the foot is also about 5 miles
long.
Alex Morrison
was born in 1915 and for many years people from near and far have
contacted him about his knowledge of life on Rathlin and the people
of the Island.
Alex wants to
pass on to the next and succeeding generations all that he has learned
in his life and what has been passed to him by
his ancestors.
Alex hopes to
preserve reminders of the old customs and practices which would
otherwise be lost because he is the last remaining person who has
experienced these.
"My
book should certainly help exiles envisage what life was really
like for their ancestors on Rathlin Island. There is also the educational
factor in this book for budding historians, heritage and cultural
students.
Lastly,
The preparation of this book is giving me an ongoing quality and
enjoyment of life as the community and commitment to it, have always
been my life"
